Gene Kilroy, a native of Mahanoy City here in Schuylkill County, was the instrumental factor in Muhammad Ali deciding to build a training camp at Deer Lake. Gene was with Ali throughout much of his career and served as his business manager and right-hand man. He traveled the world with Ali and had a “ringside seat” to one of the most famous and interesting lives of the 20th century. One of Gene’s favorite lines is "The only fear I have is that someday my mother is gonna wake me up and say it’s time to go to school. That my life has been a Dream..." But it has not been a dream. Kilroy has been there through it all.

After Ali’s career ended, Gene has spent his life in Las Vegas working as an executive for various casinos. Gene has been a valuable resource for photographs and research during the restoration of the camp since he was here from the very beginning.
